What is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the number of calories your body needs to maintain basic physiological functions at rest, such as breathing, circulation, and cell production. It accounts for about 60-75% of daily calorie expenditure.
How is BMR calculated?
This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor Equation, which is considered the most accurate for calculating BMR:
- For men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) + 5
- For women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) - 5 × age(y) - 161
Activity Level Multipliers
The daily calorie needs are calculated by multiplying your BMR by an activity factor:
- Sedentary: BMR × 1.2
- Lightly active: BMR × 1.375
- Moderately active: BMR × 1.55
- Very active: BMR × 1.725
- Extra active: BMR × 1.9
